Team

House Juliane
World-renowned scholar with an extensive track record of publications on pragmatics, contrastive pragmatics and English as a Lingua Franca. One of the founders of modern Translation Studies. Juliane House is full Professor at Hellenic American University. She received her first degree in English and Spanish translation and international law from Heidelberg University, Germany, her B.Ed., M.A. and Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Toronto, Canada and honorary doctorates from the Universities Jyväskylä, Finland and Jaume I, Castellon, Spain. She is Emerita Professor of Applied Linguistics at Hamburg University and a founding member of the German Science Foundation’s Research Centre on Multilingualism. She currently serves as the Director of the Ph.D. program in Language and Communication offered at Hellenic American University.

Irvine Niakaris Christine
Leading scholar in Greece and abroad on language teaching and Assessment and Professor at Hellenic American University. Christine Irvine-Niakaris has over twenty years’ experience in teaching and teacher training in Greece, the UK and at the British Council, Bahrain, and has taught graduate courses as a visiting professor at Saint Michael's College, Vermont, US. Professor Irvine-Niakaris has also written several EFL textbooks and given presentations regularly at international conferences in Europe and the US. Prof. Niakaris has a wide spectrum of research interests and mainly focuses on language teacher learning in continuous professional development; competency- based assessment; and teachers’ conceptions of research.

Kaniklidou Themis
Themis Kaniklidou is Associate Professor in Translation and Communication Studies at Hellenic American University. She completed her PhD in in Media Discourse and Translation at the University of Athens and her current research focuses on language and communication, populism, metaphor analysis, translation, discourse analysis, intercultural communication, framing, and media discourse. Themis has published in peer-reviewed journals and written chapters for edited textbooks. Kourbani Vassiliki
Vassiliki Kourbani is an Associate Professor in Applied Linguistics at Hellenic American University. Dr. Kourbani has an M.A. in Theoretical Linguistics from the University of Chicago, an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Illinois and a B.A. in English Language and Literature from the University of Athens. She is an engaged researcher and co-author of a handbook for teachers of Greek as a Foreign Language. She been involved in research in areas such as online foreign language testing and the development of an online platform for the teaching of Greek as a foreign language. At Hellenic American University, she currently serves as Director of the Writing Center, the Writing Program and the English Language and Literature Program (BAELL).

Her research interests include narrative analysis in Writing Center theory and practice, asynchronous/synchronous online feedback, literacy practices and intercultural communication. Her research includes projects on

  • Writing and the revision processes of non-native speakers who speak English as a foreign language (EFL)
  • The use of asynchronous/synchronous online peer response groups in EFL writing
  • The Contrastive and Comparative Knowledge about US and International Writing Centers

Nikolaou Alexander
Nicolaou Alexaner holds a PhD in English and an MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Birmingham, UK and a BA in English from Deree College, Greece. Since 2006 he has taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses in linguistics and academic writing at Hellenic American University and served as Coordinator of the MA in Applied Linguistics. He is an Associate Fellow of the British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes and since 2017, he has been teaching on the summer pre-sessional EAP course at the University of Bristol, UK. His research interests include L2 motivation, linguistic landscapes, the discursive construction of identity and corpus-based discourse analysis.
