Scoring and Results of the ETECT

Level 5

Explanation of Scoring

Both Level 5 papers of the English Teaching Competency Test (ETECT) are scored using an advanced mathematical model (Rasch). For each paper of the ETECT examination, raw scores are converted into scaled scores ranging from 0 to 1,000.

Scaled scores allow each administration of the examination to be equated, ensuring that the ability required to pass or to achieve a high score remains the same from one administration to the next.

Paper 1: Methodology

For Paper 1: Methodology, scaled scores are not simply the percentage of correct answers because the difficulty of the task as well as the leniency and/or severity of the raters have been incorporated in the scaled scores. To pass Paper 1: Methodology of the ETECT examination, Level 5 candidates must have a scaled score of at least 650 out of 1,000 on that paper.

Paper 2: Language Awareness

For Paper 2: Language Awareness, scaled scores are not simply the percentage of correct answers because the difficulty of the task as well as the leniency and/or severity of the raters have been incorporated in the scaled scores. To pass Paper 2: Language Awareness of the ETECT examination, Level 5 candidates must have a scaled score of at least 650 out of 1,000 on that paper.

Following the application of an aggregate scoring system , Level 5 candidates who achieve an averaged total scaled score of at least 650 out of a possible 1,000 are awarded an ETECT Certificate.

Section Scaled Scores

The table below shows the minimum-scaled pass scores candidates need to pass each paper of the Level 5 ETECT examination and the minimum average total scaled score candidates need to receive a Level 5 certificate.

Section Minimum scaled pass score for section
(out of 1,000)
Paper 1: Methodology 650
Paper 2: Language Awareness 650
Total Average Scaled Score 650

Level 5 candidates who achieve an averaged total scaled score of at least 650 out of a possible 1,000 are awarded an ETECT Level 5 Certificate, regardless of whether they failed any particular paper. All candidates have the right to have their examination re-scored.

Level 7

Explanation of Scoring

All Level 7 papers of the English Teaching Competency Test (ETECT) are scored using an advanced mathematical model (Rasch).

To pass Paper 1: Methodology of the ETECT examination, Level 7 candidates must have a scaled score of at least 700 out of 1,000 on that paper.

Paper 2: Language Awareness

For Paper 2: Language Awareness, scaled scores are not simply the percentage of correct answers because the difficulty of the task as well as the leniency and/or severity of the raters have been incorporated in the scaled scores. To pass Paper 2: Language Awareness of the ETECT examination, Level 7 candidates must have a scaled score of at least 700 out of 1,000 on that paper.

Paper 3: Essays

For Paper 3: Essays, scaled scores are not simply the numerical score assigned by the raters because the difficulty of the task as well as the leniency and/or severity of the raters have been incorporated in the scaled scores. To pass Paper 3: Essays of the ETECT examination, Level 7 candidates must have a scaled score of at least 700 out of 1,000 on that paper.

Following the application of an aggregate scoring system , Level 7 candidates who achieve an averaged total scaled score of at least 700 out of a possible 1,000 are awarded an ETECT Certificate.

Section Scaled Scores

The table below shows the minimum-scaled pass scores candidates need to pass each paper of the Level 7 ETECT examination and the minimum average total scaled score candidates need to receive a Level 7 certificate.

Section Minimum scaled pass score for section
(out of 1,000)
Paper 1: Methodology 700
Paper 2: Language Awareness 700
Paper 3: Essays 700
Total Average Scaled Score 700

Level 7 candidates who achieve an averaged total scaled score of at least 700 out of a possible 1,000 are awarded an ETECT Level 7 Certificate, regardless of whether they failed any particular paper. All candidates have the right to have their examination re-scored.

Level 7 candidates who failed to achieve an ETECT Level 7 certificate may still be awarded an ETECT Level 5 Certificate if they have an averaged total scaled score of at least 650 out of a possible 1,000 on Paper 1 and Paper 2.
